Jacob Riis

Thomas Nast

Comparison- These two men were essentially part of the same party and shared the same beliefs. They both represented what they believed in through different ways. Riis used his writings and Nast used his art and pictures. They both were trying to stop the continuing rise of all of the extremely rich people and the continuing poverty that affected so many. The contrast between these two were the means in which they went about stopping this. Art and writing are two different things, but both can have such a lasting effect.
Reforms- Nast was a main reason that a lot of corruption was taken down in New York in the 1800's. Riis stuck more with a broad reform socially. He didn't really have a set reform but did help expose the poverty in the lower class. Overall these two men were very successful in what they did. Many people turned against the rich and powerful and socially corrupt thanks to Thomas Nast. Also after reading the documents that Jacob Riis wrote people started to focus more on the things that were going on in their own cities instead of just not putting any attention into them.
